Boosting Cycling Advocacy in the City

By Chris | January 17, 2010 |

My name is Jason Turpin, I am a local Bike Mechanic/Gardner.  I spend the vast majority of my time assembling bicycles, bbq ,patio and home furnishing for major retailers, Walmart and Zellers.  But my true love is being at my bicycle shop/garden on Howard Ave where my interaction with the cycling public is one on one.  I have actively worked with and been a member of the City of Windsor Bicycling Committee for 6 year and have come to a crossroad in cycling activism so speak.

12 meetings Is not enough.

There is a lot that needs to be accomplished for cycling in Windsor.  It is a uphill battle in Windsor no doubt.
I can’t be critical of current or past WBC members. I have been there with them.  Politics have diminished WBC strength in the past and the city strike added to already struggling committee. -I am not making excuses,we dropped the ball. From what I have seen to date, I strongly believe that you will see a new bicycle
committee. However,

12 meeting is still not enough!

The recent brainstorming session we had at the WBC meeting drew a pretty clear picture of what needs to be done for cycling in Windsor. Everything on that brainstorming list needs to be done. There wasn’t one single idea or concept that shouldn’t be put forth and completed.

I propose that another cycling advocacy group needs to be brought together to tackle some of the burden. We need more cycling advocacy that is not interrupted or controlled by city politics. I propose that as many cyclist as possible meet at Milk Cafe, but if anyone knows of a quiet meeting place please feel free to let me know. Next sunday 10 AM , would be ideal, but I am open to other times if this doesn’t work for most.

I propose that this meeting be open to all venues of cycling, recreational and commuter. We need to hear from all cyclist even if you just join us once, for input.

I don’t what kind of cycling advocacy group would work best so please bring your ideas and a open mind to the ideas and thoughts of others.

I can be contacted for questions at jasonturpin1970@yahoo.com Or Jasonturpin1970@gmail.com

Thanks you

For those who did not participate in the meeting, what were some of the issues/concerns that were raised?

Sounds like a lot of doublespeak and bafflegab. The question basically why was $325,000 not been spent as budgeted and the conclusion referred to inadequate funding.

I dont’ think they answered the question.

Chris, did you bring on the Guerilla bike lane painting
