Committees of Council Appointees

By Chris | April 7, 2009 |

Hero of the corporation!

Many readers expressed an interest in getting further involved in working with our city to make some positive change happen in our declining hometown.

Back in early February of this year, we put out the call for citizens to get involved in the various committees of council, as there were numerous vacancies needed to be filled.

So, without making you wait another second, here is the accepted list of new appointees to these committees, as selected by the striking committee on March 23;

  • Court of Revision
    Michael Peris
  • Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee
    Daniel Baggio
    Michael Greige
    Jonathon Liedtke
    Jennifer Luu
    Timothy Miron
    Osman Raza
    Tiger Zheng
  • Museum Advisory Committee
    Rosemarie Denunzio
    Alan Douglas
    Terri Lawrence-Tayler
    Jeffrey Mellow
  • Planning Advisory Committee
    Barbara Bjarneson
    Tom McMahon
  • Seniors Advisory Committee
    Joyce Nixon (service provider)
    Lorraine Thibeault (senior)
    Alex Gyemi (senior)
  • Transit Windsor
    Bernard Drouillard (Labour Council)
  • Windsor Bicycling Committee
    Tristan Fehrenbach
    Mark Lindquist
    Frederick Littlejohns
    Margaret Trojand
    Christopher Waters
  • Windsor Essex County Environment Committee
    John Miller
    Michael Peris
    Gary Standish
  • Windsor Heritage Committee
    Gudein Bildfell
    Paul DeMarco
    Bethany Helena Findlay
    Janis Marchand
    Jeffrey Mellow
    Noreen Slack

Congratulations to everyone who was successfully appointed to these committees, as well as to all of you who applied.  The health and vibrancy of our community would be diminished without civic-minded individuals such as yourself.  Keep in mind that these appointments are only in place until November 30, 2009, as the terms or service were extended and many chose not to extend their tenure.  You will have another chance at the end of this calendar year to apply for these positions.

Yes, I am a little disapointed that my name wasn’t included on the list for the new Planning Advisory Committee, but I am not surprised. It would have taken a lot of courage for the voting members of council to appoint someone as vocal and critical (of the status quo) as myself to an official post on one of the more powerful committees of council there is.

If you would like to see the original correspondence sent to me by the clerk’s department, please click here.  It includes the names of the councillors responsible for voting on this list (all but Coun. Postma were present) as well as the various other appointments made that session.

Come on Chris, are you surprised? Naysayers have no place on Council Committees. Once my term is done on the Heritage Committee, I doubt I will ever be appointed to any other committee.

Good to note, that I see a regular reader of International Metropolis appointed to the Windsor Bicycling Committee! At least we’re making some headway….

No, not at all (didn’t I write that?) surprised.

I guess I had my stint; enviro committee, a few terms on the bicycling committee and a few attempts at PAC. I’m not going to just roll over, though. If we don’t keep trying, we may as well stick our butts in the air and ask them to park their bikes in there.

Tim Miron was appointed to the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee. Attaboy, Tim!

Who’s that guy appointed to Transit Windsor, Andrew? The name sounds familiar…

Anyone else we know make it onto the list? It’s hard to tell with so many of our readers using pseudonyms.

Wow. I need to check my gmail account because I sent in the application to join the MYAC a while ago and in true bureaucratic fashion didn’t hear anything back about it for months - in fact I wasn’t sure they’d even recieved my application. I just read my name here and had to check my eyesight. =D

Hope to see more people from ScaleDown on these committees in the future!

ScaleDown had the scoop on this one, Tim. The city hasn’t even notified the successful apointees yet. I just happened to call the clerks department to find out the status of the committees, and voila!

Man, I want one of those T-shirts. Want to show my love for this city, no matter how bad things are. My lapel pin just doesn’t do justice to a shirt!

I’m a daily Scaledown and IM visitor, have signed on to the Bicycling Committee and am looking forward to the experience. Thanks for publishing this list and generating some excitement about the process.

It’s an exciting time to be a Windsorite, Tristan, and I’m glad to have you representing our interests on the WBC. Thanks for taking this step forward!

Andrew is right on the money with his assessment. If one is critical or doesn’t “go with the flow” (who can afford to flush anymore?) then one will NEVER get on most of these committees no matter how much experience one might have.

Did you notice that two of the most important committees are still deferred? Audit Committee (when is that ever going to get going along with the Auditor General, he has been hired after all) & the Town & Gown Committee (no worries it is just another neighbourhood that is falling down while the city once again plays “divide and conquer”).

Kudos to those who made it but don’t ruffle feathers lest you be removed.

Congratulations to Jonathon Liedtke on being appointed to Mayor’s Youth Advisory Committee. Jonathon was one of the founding members and has returned. Way to go, Jonathon!

We should have a good group of youth for MYAC. I’m excited to get our meetings going again as we awaited for City Council to appoint new members! Many exciting things to come.
