Community Photography Project

Calling all Windsor Photographers,
ScaleDown will be partnering with Windsor area BIA’s in a project aimed to promote community pride and celebrate our neighbourhoods in 2009.
With the recent snowfall, attention has been brought to just how beautiful our core communities are - especially layered in that fresh, fluffy snow. In an effort to highlight these communities, we are looking to local photographers to capture the spirit of the neighbourhoods in photographs that we will be reproducing as Holiday Cards for the 2009 Holiday season.
We will be featuring cards with four (4) photos per community. When you are out there in this weekends predicted record snowfall taking your photos, please try and highlight identifiable neighbourhood landmarks and streetscapes and make the images scream neighbourhood pride!
Which neighbourhoods you ask? If it’s got a Business Improvement Association, we’re going to feature it. Here a list of Windsor’s BIA’s (city BIA map);
- Downtown Windsor BIA
- Ford City Business District
- Olde Riverside Town Centre
- Olde Sandwich Towne Business Association
- Ottawa Street BIA
- Pillette Village BIA
- Via Italia/Erie Street BIA
- Walkerville BIA
- Wyandotte Towne Centre BIA
We are still working out the specific details as to how much we will be able to pay for the chosen photographs and layout of the cards, but we wanted to give everyone the heads-up so they can open up some space on those SD cards to capture the best images of our local neighbourhood gems they can. The cards themselves will be printed on 7″ X 5″ cardtock, and we will be noting the location in the city the photo was taken as well as the photographers name. Please supply us with this information along with the photo.
Contact me at chris@scaledown.ca with your submissions or for any additional information. Looking forward to seeing what the incredibly creative folks in Windsor captures to represent what they love about these great neighbourhoods!

count me in…maybe i’ll go around tonight before hockey.
I’m in! Being an Air sign and not an air head, unless you count being bald as air headeness, I love a good storm!!
Brilliant. Finally a contest that isn’t negative! I’m in !!
I’m game! Definitely! I’ll see what other photo enthusiasts I can wrassle from Windsor Visuals too.
when is the deadline?
Whenever the “Christmassy”-type weather that you would want to capture ends! We only have a small window of opportunity to get the shots we would want to highlight on these holiday cards, so you have the whole season to get what you want.
In the spring, we will judge the submitted works and begin layout of the cards and content.
What are you doing wasting all this lovely snow while you’re barricading yourself in the house?!? Get out there and shoot some photos!
barricading myself in the house? if i remember correctly, as i was passing your house this morning your front porch was the one barricaded in
plus don’t you remember the whole snowblower conversation?
that thing is a lifesaver! haha
Oh, that’s right! I forgot about you driving by me in your SUV (that runs on puppy’s tears and the hopes of babies) to pick up your snowblower (that runs on ground dolphin)
Thanks for reminding me!
it runs on ground beluga whale….get it right Chris
Hey “me” how about a different handle yes?
Who’s barricaded? I have been shoveling snow for 2.5 hours! And I sure am tired.
Count me in on the photo fun!
i’m me, you are you.
Me and mini me.

So… there was no EXACT deadline set then?
Nope. You’ve got all the time in the world, Jolie.
Well, not exactly. Use this winter season to capture holiday-specific images and be sure to send them into me after. We’re hoping to start assembling all the photos in the spring and go from there. We hope to have the finished cards in local stores early November.
We’ve got a project coordinator who will be taking the lead on this project. Nancy Yim will be the go-to person for liasing with the BIA’s and the artists and spearheading the production of the cards. Contact her at nancyyim@yahoo.ca if you have any questions or submissions. You can also contact me directly at chris@scaledown.ca
I’m really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!
I think only 1 or 2 people sent something to Chris, but then nothing else came in. It was weird… when we’d talk to people about it, they were pretty enthused, but then nothing… what a shame. I think we should still look into doing it, even if we don’t get it done for this season.
Looking through old emails, I totally forgot to send you all the photos I shot last winter for this. D’OH!!
I wonder, did they get any submissions? I don’t recall seeing any updates on this.
sorry for the out of sequence reply to Owen and John!!
Sokay Nancy! We found the replies just fine I’m sure. Thanks.
You can always repeat the program this winter. I feel there has been a surge of interest in local photography in the past year.
I started a Flickr group for fun last winter called “Snowmaggedon” after that “storm” and got 132 submissions (107 from the same person).
