Bikes are cool!
Good news, folks. (well, maybe not that good for area Ford workers) It seems that bicycles are “in” and outselling cars! According to peopleandplanet.net…
“The world produced an estimated 130 million bicycles in 2007 — more than twice the 52 million cars produced.”
I think this means that we should spend twice what we pay for auto infrastrucure on the cycling variety! For a start, maybe we will be convince the city to actually spend the money they have budgeted for the Bicycle Use Master Plan and build that cycling infrastructure (even on Riverside Drive…) since we’re going to be innundated with cyclists soon.

I have an idea for a start up company here in Windsor, we can import all the used bicycles being given up by the people of China and India, who are rushing to buy cars, and refurbish them for sale in Windsor! These bikes will be sold so cheaply, so that when stolen, the cost to the owner is minimal but there will be so many of them, that the thieves will give up finding no real value to stealing them, they will just by their own.
Just an idea!

This Amsterdam site tells of how bicycling is working there and working well.
Meanwhile our government is throwing cash at failing car companies that will continue to produce more smog.
With gas prices doubling in one year, and with no end in sight, I too am looking fondly back at the days when bikes were my main mode of travel.
i’ve seen the a’dam cycling document before and love it. imagine that…a city that cares about it’s inhabitants. in many cities across the world bicycle sharing programs are becoming very popular. along with amsterdam barcelona (Bicing.com), london, paris(Velib Bike program), and more recently in Washington DC (SmartBike DC) and so many others have implemented similar programs. I think in Barcelona it may even be free.
love the concept of being able to rent bikes at stations throughout the city to avoid using the car or even combining it with public transit.
i’m usually in a’dam every summer and going again this summer and they definitely are doing something right. their city is completely transforming. their core areas are “green zones” and do not allow cars and i think they may even be considering expanding those zones to larger parts of the city. i’m always in awe of the changes within the city each time i visit.
